When Education Becomes a Family Journey
At Pathways College, we believe higher education should meet students where they are— and sometimes, that means walking alongside family. Recently, we had the privilege of celebrating a powerful milestone: a mother and daughter graduating together, each earning a bachelor’s degree through Pathways College’s flexible, online programs.
For Mrs. Garcia, returning to college was both a professional and personal commitment. As she explored a career change, she knew a Bachelor of Business Administration would open doors and create long-term stability. Pathways College’s online format made it possible for her to pursue that goal while balancing work, family, and life.
“Completing it online allowed me the flexibility I needed as a working adult, spouse, and mother,” she shared. “It made committing to my education realistic and achievable.”
Education had always been a cornerstone of the Garcia household. Mrs. Garcia openly shared her own experiences with her daughter, emphasizing how a degree can shape opportunity and career mobility. Those conversations helped set a clear family expectation: a bachelor’s degree was not just an aspiration, but a goal.
When the opportunity arose for her daughter to complete college coursework while still in high school through an accelerated pathway, Mrs. Garcia made a promise—to pursue her own degree alongside her. Together, they transformed education into a shared experience rooted in encouragement, accountability, and example.
That journey became even more meaningful during a difficult personal chapter, when Mrs. Garcia’s father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. One of his final pieces of advice—to keep learning and never stop pursuing her goals—became a lasting source of motivation.
Reflecting on her experience, Mrs. Garcia hopes other adults see themselves in her story.
“Age truly is just a number,” she said. “Returning to college as an adult can be incredibly rewarding. Life experience adds perspective and depth to the learning process.”
At Pathways College, we are proud to support learners at every stage of life—career changers, working adults, parents, and lifelong learners. Stories like the Garcia family’s remind us that education doesn’t just change individual futures; it strengthens families and builds legacies.
